Kansas City provides a blueprint for the Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers are only four years removed from a Super Bowl appearance. On that night they ended their season with an uncharacteristically poor performance that ultimately resulted in a loss.

While the Panthers had a great offense that year they weren’t good enough to stay on the field and turn the tide in their favor. The next few weeks were full of conversations about how “defenses win championships” and things of that nature.

However, in Super Bowl LIV, a night where the best defense in the league went toe-to-toe with the best offense in the league, we bore witness to the exact opposite of that philosophy. Patrick Mahomes and the “traveling track meet” tore apart headliner Nick Bosa and his fellow 49er countrymen in the last quarter of an otherwise one-sided game.

Kyle Shanahan may have been able to keep up the ruse of having the defense carry the team while an adequate quarterback (whose only claim to fame was being Tom Brady’s backup) sat back and enjoyed the ride. They both had to learn the hard way that defenses no longer determine the victor. We are now in an age where the offense carries the edge.
