Former Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis comments on Cam Newton situation.

The Carolina Panthers are dominating headlines this offseason with new coaching hires and surprise departures. Owner David Tepper named Baylor University coach Matt Rhule as the new leader of his franchise before making another splash with LSU’s Joe Brady coming on board as offensive coordinator.

However, despite the exciting additions Carolina has also encountered some major losses and more could be on the way. Linebacker Luke Kuechly shockingly retired last month and tight end Greg Olsen is expected to play elsewhere next season. The health of quarterback Cam Newton remains up in the air, along with the franchise’s sense of commitment, leading to rumors swirling about where he ends up.

The latest comes from former teammate Thomas Davis, who after being told he wouldn’t be re-signed, left the team a year ago for Los Angeles. Faced with their own veteran quarterback contract scenario, the Chargers are likely to move on from Philip Rivers this offseason and Davis may subtly be recruiting Newton to Tinseltown.

Saying Tepper’s recent comments on Newton’s health, “sounds like a team that is not totally committed” Davis ended his segment on NFL Total Access by saying he recently talked to Newton and that it may be best to “find another team”.

Regardless, Tepper’s inability to commit on Newton due to his “health” is going to make things extremely interesting when a decision is made. If Carolina does attempt to move their former No. 1 overall pick, then teams are likely going to be hesitant due to the groundwork being laid for what seems to be if completely healthy – he comes back.

Newton has gone on the record saying he is “absolutely” returning and if he’s willing to accept a shorter “prove it” type extension then it’s a strong possibility, but being able to command more money elsewhere may ultimately make the decision.

Right now there’s just too many unknowns for anything other than speculation but it would make an already scheduled Carolina visit to Los Angeles extremely interesting in 2020.
