Carolina Panthers tabbed as potential landing spot for Philip Rivers
Could Philip Rivers quarterback the Carolina Panthers in 2020?
As the offseason progresses, the more likely it seems Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will play elsewhere next year. After being drafted first overall in 2011, Newton led Carolina through their most successful string of seasons in franchise history, including both a Super Bowl appearance and league MVP award.
However, due to recent injuries and a growing concern about his future. Owner David Tepper, new coach Matt Rhule and the team have been unwilling to throw their support behind the 30-year old quarterback. Instead, all parties have dodged questions about Newton’s future, relying on his health as a pivotal component for any potential decision making.
While there is no doubt this is a major concern. Newton has earned the right to prove himself before any drastic measures are taken by the team. Unfortunately, this may not be feasible as time is running out and Carolina stands to save considerably should they move on from their current signal-caller prior to kickoff next season.

If so, there is one veteran quarterback who would make a particularly interesting addition in the interim between Newton and someone to lean on for the future. The Los Angeles Chargers are expected to part ways with long-time quarterback Philip Rivers and his collegiate ties to the state and veteran leadership capabilities make Carolina a potential landing spot for him.
Despite being nearly 10-years older, the return Carolina may generate from moving Newton could help address other areas of personnel. Additionally, Rivers is likely to only play a few more seasons but this would give the Panthers and Rhule time to find and develop someone to take over down the road.
There are multiple possible outcomes to the current Newton situation but answers should be coming soon as the new league year begins next month.
