2). Salary cap relief
General manager Marty Hurney fully knows that in order for the Panthers to get back on track and into more winning ways, they’ll need more salary cap room to play with. Releasing Newton brought the Panthers well over $20 million in salary cap relief which will undoubtedly give them more breathing room. The Panthers have already made some good moves so far this offseason and still have a few more to make before the 2020 NFL Draft.
With all the releases the Panthers have made so far this offseason, they actually lead the NFL in the amount of dead money that has hit the team hard. This rebuilding season that the Panthers are on will easily take a few years to hopefully produce results but releasing Newton is a smart step financially.
At the end of the day, it’s another one of those classic “business as usual” moves. Yeah, it hurts to dare think of Newton wearing another team’s uniform but it’s just a part of being in the NFL. Hopefully, Newton finds a great new team to thrive on and the Panthers bring back above-average play from under center from one of their new quarterbacks.
