Carolina Panthers Tre Boston studies rival NFC South coach Sean Payton
Carolina Panthers safety Tre Boston is getting a head start on scouting for 2020.
The Carolina Panthers enter 2020 under Matt Rhule, a former collegiate coach with a reputation for bringing struggling programs to prominence. While the change signaled a significant shift in philosophy from the Panthers organization, how he and his staff decide to implement their new system remains to be seen.
Rhule enlisted the services of Joe Brady on offense and defensive coordinator Phil Snow – who worked with him at both Temple and Baylor – to orchestrate improvement from Carolina on both sides of the football. Specifically, on defense, the Panthers have a number of positions to address although two safety spots appear set with Tre Boston and Juston Burris.
The former is readily active on social media and didn’t miss an opportunity to somewhat troll divisional rival New Orleans Sean Payton when presented with a chance. Payton, who is the second-longest tenured coach behind the New England Patriots Bill Belichick, simply replied to Bobby Peters Twitter thread about favorite plays out of an empty (five receivers) offensive set.

Payton mentioned and even diagrammed two of his favorite schemes – one an all go set with a single underneath route and the other an option route designed to combat quarters coverage. Named ‘Gun Empty Right Quizno – 52 All Go Special X Shallow Cross’ and ‘Gun Bombers Right – 352 Y Shock X Lucy’ the two play designs are drawing a lot of attention on social media.
Fortunately for Carolina, Boston was paying close attention. Responding to both submissions, the Panthers safety tweeted GIFs of note-taking individuals alluding to how he is scouting one of the Panthers biggest rivals. While what Payton revealed may be considered as a base concept, the interaction between these two competitors is still fun to watch.
Provided he’s healthy, Boston should get more than one real-life opportunity to defend against Payton, quarterback Drew Brees and the Saints offense next season.
