Carolina Panthers need to stay away from drafting a quarterback
As the Carolina Panthers prepare for the 2020 NFL Draft, there is no reason for them to consider drafting a new quarterback.
At of right now, the Carolina Panthers have a good situation at quarterback. So far this offseason, they signed Teddy Bridgewater via free agency and also added XFL star quarterback P.J. Walker. In addition to these two new quarterback signings, Will Grier will also return for this upcoming season.
When it comes to the top draft needs of the Carolina Panthers, it’s all about defense. General manager Marty Hurney has a tall task ahead to address several areas of need on the defensive side of the ball. The Panthers’ defense needs help on their defensive line, cornerback, and would be wise to add an edge rusher or two in their 2020 NFL Draft class.
With three active quarterbacks on the roster all duking it out in training camp to earn the starting spot, it wouldn’t make sense to select a quarterback in this year’s draft. Considering that Bridgewater is only signed to a three-year deal, it means that the Panthers will tread lightly with him under center. If all works out great over the next few years, then he can be their long-term answer at the most important position on the team.
The Carolina Panthers should not draft a quarterback

If it doesn’t work out, then the Panthers could set themselves up nicely in 2021 or even 2022 to use their first round draft pick on a future franchise quarterback. This year’s class isn’t all that rich with quarterbacks that are ready to take the NFL by storm. There are a few but besides the top three in this year’s class, there is much left to the imagination.
It would be a waste of a draft pick for the Panthers to use it on a quarterback when they’ll be more than fine for this season. It’s expected that Bridgewater will start for the Panthers and either Walker or Grier earning a backup role behind him.
It’s likely the Panthers will start the season with just two quarterbacks on the roster and hope everything works out okay. There wouldn’t be a need to have a third quarterback on the roster or even draft a prospect to groom for the future at this point in time.
The Panthers should stick with addressing their top defensive needs by drafting the best available players when they’re on the clock and bring in top talent ready to make some noise. If the Panthers can start rebuilding their defense now, perhaps in 2021 and 2022, they can add a few more pieces on offense including a future franchise quarterback if things go south with Bridgewater.
Overall, the Panthers are looking good at the moment as they prepare for what awaits in this year’s draft. Hopefully, there isn’t a quarterback on their draft board that’s of a higher priority than some obvious weaknesses on defense. Actually, here’s to hoping there isn’t a quarterback at all on their draft board.
