Carolina Panthers: Marty Hurney confirms that defense is next
General manager Marty Hurney recently has a press conference in which he confirmed that defense is next for the Carolina Panthers. Expect to see it be a heavy focus in the 2020 NFL Draft.
As the Carolina Panthers prepare for the 2020 NFL Draft in just a few weeks, the offseason moves general manager Marty Hurney has already painted a story. They’ve added better talent across the offensive side of the ball including at quarterback, the most important position on the team. Teddy Bridgewater will likely start under center and he’ll have several new decent weapons around him to hopefully get the job done.
The Panthers made some good moves via free agency to bolster the offense nicely. It remains to be seen how everything will pan out as it looks good on paper but there is still training camp and preseason action before seeing what the potential can be. For the most part, the offense should be better, even if slightly, this upcoming season than what we’ve seen over the last few years.
Hurney recently started the week with a press conference to let everyone know what’s been going on and more importantly, what’s the gameplan heading into this year’s draft. Needless to say, Hurney confirmed that yes, boosting the defense is going to be an area to focus on as they finalize their draft board.

In an article written by Scott Fowler of The Charlotte Observer, here is what Hurney said when asked about the status of the roster:
"“We’ve put a lot of currency into the offensive side. We’ve obviously added depth at receiver, added depth and competition on the offensive line and we’ve changed quarterbacks … So if you were to say ‘What area do you look at the most’ it would be defense rather than offense at this point.”"
Hopefully, this means Hurney will likely use their first few draft picks to address their defensive woes. With clear needs on their defensive line, at cornerback, and their overall run-stopping efficiency, it’s important that word gets out that the Panthers mean business in rebuilding the right way.
Defense wins championships and even though the Panthers are a few years away from fielding a competitive team, this will be the start of drafting defensive building blocks for years to come. The kind of solid players that can create a stout defense that is a cohesive unit with zero weaknesses as a group.
While the Panthers will likely have some growing pains in 2020 as they adjust to life without several of their household names, better days should be ahead if Hurney sticks to what he spoke about this week. Of course, anything can change, but for now, it’s a great sight to see that at least the main decision-makers have a strategy to use in this year’s draft to strengthen their overall defense.
