Cam Newton is wise to be patient before finding his new home
Free agent quarterback Cam Newton is still trying to find a new home in the NFL. It looks like he’ll be patient and wait a bit before committing to a new team.
By now, reality has sunk in that quarterback Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers are no more. He’ll go down as one of the best quarterbacks in franchise history as it’ll easily take a while for anyone to even come close to the records he’s set with the team. So far this offseason, Newton has continued to rehab well and is working hard to be ready for what awaits in the future.
There is an update on Newton’s plans so far as every team prepares for the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler confirmed on Twitter that Newton is being patient and will likely wait until after this year’s draft to find the right team for him. There is also a possibility that teams will likely wait until training camp to see how their quarterback situations turn out before considering to give Newton a shot.
The biggest reason that Newton has yet to gather any major interest that could lead to a signing is the uncertainty he brings to the table. His health is a major reason why teams have likely stayed away as it’s not easy to come back from foot surgery and play at a starting quarterback level again. There is also the realism that perhaps Newton might have to take a step back before jumping forward.

In the grand scheme of things, Newton is wise to being patient and not just signing on to any team for the sake of finding a new home. This is a systematic process as Newton will obviously want an opportunity to start and well, if one doesn’t present itself immediately, he might have to switch to Plan B.
It will be hard for Newton to adjust to something like this but maybe he should consider signing onto a team as a backup quarterback. That way, he can continue to heal up as he eases back into football activities and be ready when his number is called.
Who knows what the conversations are like between general managers and Newton’s agent but perhaps an opportunity to work his way up again and into a starting role would be better for him as he adjusts to life outside of the Panthers. There is no shame in being a backup and going through the process again to show you can still take care of business.
Many prolific quarterbacks have done this and sometimes being in a backup role for a season or two can eventually lead to everything falling into place once you get that shot again. Newton is a natural-born leader, a playmaker, and has the heart of a winner. If he can come back healthy and ready to execute, there is no telling how far he can go on a team that caters to his unique strengths.
Overall, patience is a great virtue to have in life and even more so in sports. It’s good to see Newton take his time with this process as no matter what, he deserves nothing but the best wherever he lands. Whatever team eventually signs him, as there will definitely be one in due time, will get a quarterback that still has a lot to prove to the football world.
