Trading the first-round pick

There seem to be a lot of people who think drafting the No.1 corner, linebacker, or defensive tackle will make the team contenders again. But there were a lot of defensive losses this offseason and there might be more in 2021.

The Panthers need to draft immediate contributors at numerous positions to get them used to the ferocious offenses of the NFC South. This can ideally be done without trading away one of the current starters.

One pick can’t fill the three gaping holes left on defense. However, three picks with a top-five categorical projection would be a lot more promising.

Trading back for a pick in the first and second rounds would be the most realistic scenario. But it’s not a bad deal for a rebuilding team to invest in multiple high-potential players rather than one with a big reputation.

If the Panthers happen to acquire two first-round picks or a first and an early second it would give them the capital to acquire a top-five defensive tackle, a top-five corner, and a top-five linebacker to work with.

That would also leave the possibility of using their third-round pick to double down on any one of those positions with a top-ten prospect on the books.

This scenario will also enable the Panthers to have the option of using their last five picks to continue stockpiling defensive talent or begin acquiring offensive depth. The wide receiver room is well-stocked as are the options available at running back. But another guard or tackle wouldn’t hurt to have at this point.
