New Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule recently spoke about how great of a player running back Christian McCaffrey is. It’s a great endorsement for hopefully, a new contract.

In just three years with the Carolina Panthers, running back Christian McCaffrey has already developed into a household name. He’s a swiss army knife kind of offensive playmaker that consistently keeps those chains moving. Not only is he the premier threat on offense for the Panthers but he’s a great locker room presence to have as a team player.

Let’s face it, McCaffrey is a special kind of player that has the potential to be a generational athlete. You know, an extraordinary football player that only comes along once a decade or so. Even McCaffrey’s stats prove that he’s exceptional as it’s scary to think that he’s yet to reach his true potential if he had a better supporting cast around him.

In his three-year career so far with the Panthers, McCaffrey has totaled 2,920 rushing yards, 623 attempts, and 24 touchdowns. As a receiving option, McCaffrey has totaled 2,523 yards, 303 receptions, and 15 touchdowns. Just when you think his stats sheet is over, it’s not as you can add another 220 combined yards as a kickoff and punt returner.

Needless to say, McCaffrey is just getting started but as always when it comes to the NFL, it’s a business. The truth of the matter is, McCaffrey has gone above and beyond the call of duty and if the Panthers are smart, they will lock him up immediately with a new contract extension.

One of which that not only pays him what he’s worth, which is a lot of money of course, but also keeps him wearing a Panthers uniform for many years to come.

In a recent team interview, head coach Matt Rhule said what we all know that McCaffrey is exactly what the Panthers need in the long-term. Here is what Rhule said in an article written by Myles Simmons and Zach Goins of Panthers.com:

"“I think Christian McCaffrey is a centerpiece player that you can build around,” Rhule said. “And I think he really builds to the culture that you want to have within the building.”"

Of course, Rhule didn’t get into any specifics or anything but this great endorsement of McCaffrey can only help the cause in getting him a well-deserved contract extension. Before anything gets ugly with arguably one of the best players currently on the team, general manager Marty Hurney would be wise to not only start contract extension talks now but get a new deal in place before the upcoming season.

Overall, McCaffrey will only get better with time and should be taken care of sooner rather than later. He’s done everything that’s been asked of him whenever his number was called as now it’s time to make him a Panther for what could be the rest of his professional football career.
