6 offensive tackles the Panthers could draft in 2020
By Dean Jones
Tristan Wirfs – (Iowa)
Tristan Wirfs is widely considered to be the best offensive tackle coming out of college in 2020. He is a day one starter that has the potential to become a bookend blocker for the next decade.
His power at the point of attack is absolutely phenomenal and needs absolutely no work at the next level. Wirfs’ strength is going to be a real problem for oncoming pass rushers who expect to blow by rookies during the early stages of their development.
The player’s footwork does need some work, especially in passing situations. But he possesses a solid frame that can play anywhere along the offensive line while Wirfs gets his pass-protection up to the required standard.
Wirfs is an absolute bully in the run game and blows away lineman at any given opportunity. He also has enough speed to get to the second level when required.
There is a strong case for Wirfs becoming a top-four draft selection later this month given the tools at his disposal. The player looks tailormade for the New York Giants at No.4 that would leave Carolina facing the prospect of trading up to acquire his services.
They do have some good options at the tackle spot in 2020. And with so many areas of the defense that need to be filled as a matter of urgency, taking Wirfs might not be high on their list of priorities.
If he somehow drops into their lap at No.7, it might be a different story.
