Carolina Panthers: Stephen A. Smith endorses McCaffrey’s new deal
By Dean Jones
Christian McCaffrey’s bumper new four-year deal with the Carolina Panthers got the seal of approval from ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith.
The Carolina Panthers caused a stir when they gave running back Christian McCaffrey a new four-year extension that ties him to the franchise until 2025.
Their commitment to the player will see the All-Pro earn $64 million over the duration of his deal. It could also spell good news for other running backs who are looking to get paid this offseason from the NFL Draft class of 2017 such as Dalvin Cook, Alvin Kamara, and Aaron Jones.
Much has been made as to whether McCaffrey is worthy of such a financial investment. Not due to his productivity, but the violent nature that comes with the running back position.
ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith is not of that belief, stating on Wednesday’s episode of First Take that McCaffrey deserves every cent coming his way from hie new deal.
Speaking on the new deal, Stephen A. stated:
"“You look at what he brings to the table in terms of all-purpose yards, 2,392 yards from scrimmage, 19 touchdowns, 403 touches – this dude has been absolutely spectacular and he’s been the face of the Carolina Panthers franchise for the last season and a half. He’s not just a running back, he’s a football player. Christian McCaffrey deserves what he got. Period.”"
There is little doubt McCaffrey is worthy of such an outlay. He has been ultra-productive from the moment he entered the NFL and now has the money his play deserves.
McCaffrey has gained achieved 2,920 rushing yards, 2,523 receiving yards, and 39 combined touchdowns in three seasons as a professional. The former eighth overall pick has exceeded all expectations and has not missed a regular-season game during his time in the NFL.
His 2019 campaign was the best of the player’s career to date. McCaffrey was one of the Most Valuable Player front runners thanks to lofty stats of 1,387 rushing yards, 1,005 receiving yards, 116 receptions, and 19 total touchdowns.
Although he lost out to Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens in the MVP race, McCaffrey earned a first-team All-Pro selection and is now the highest-paid running back in NFL history.
