Carolina Panthers: McCaffrey lends support to coronavirus fight
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey has joined the fight against coronavirus just days after signing a new deal with the franchise.
Christian McCaffrey has already set his sights on doing more within the community during a time of crisis.
The All-Pro running back with the Carolina Panthers announced via his Twitter account that the “22 and You” initiative will now work on supporting the work currently going on to restore and repair life-saving equipment throughout North and South Carolina.
This will aid hospital workers and other care facilities throughout the coronavirus pandemic, which has brought the country to a standstill due to social distancing measures.
McCaffrey has enlisted the support of Bose and Lowe’s Home Improvements for the project, with both companies donating a substantial amount towards the cause.
The back, who recently penned a four-year extension worth a reported $16 million annually, has also pledged to match the commitment made by the two businesses relating to the initiative.
There are at least 20 facilities across both states that need considerable work to cope with the incoming pressures of COVID-19, according to McCaffrey.
His decision comes after becoming “moved and inspired” by the “selfless efforts” of healthcare workers, medical students and others in the care profession during the pandemic so far.
In a tweet, McCaffrey wrote:
"“Like all of you, I have been watching the COVID-19 public health emergency unfold with shock and sadness. I am moved by the heroic and selfless efforts of our frontline healthcare providers throughout the Carolinas and beyond. As such, I have decided to launch an effort to help them in their life-saving work. $22, $220, or $2,200.”"
McCaffrey has achieved 2,920 rushing yards, 2,523 receiving yards, and 39 combined touchdowns in three seasons as a professional. The former eighth overall pick has exceeded all expectations and has not missed a regular-season game during his time in the NFL.
His 2019 campaign was the best of the player’s career to date. McCaffrey was one of the Most Valuable Player front runners thanks to lofty stats of 1,387 rushing yards, 1,005 receiving yards, 116 receptions, and 19 total touchdowns.
All money raised will go towards the North Carolina Healthcare Foundation and South Carolina Hospital Association Foundation.
