6 defensive ends the Panthers could draft in 2020

D.J. Wonnum – (South Carolina)
Another home state prospect that could make for a good value selection is South Carolina pass-rusher D.J. Wonnum. He has been part of the Gamecocks’ defensive scheme since his rookie year and could thrive with more opportunities at the next level.
He was seen as a situational pass-rusher during the early stages of his career. But he did play well when called upon and was helped considerably by the presence of projected first-round pick Javon Kinlaw on the interior.
Wonnum will need to spend significant time in the weight room when he gets to the NFL. His power and endurance strength will need to make vast improvements if he is to stand any chance of overcoming offensive lineman in the pros.
He demonstrates a high level of effort on almost every down and there seems to be a real willingness to get better that he is going to need.
The prospect appears little more than a developmental player in the immediate future. That being said, Wonnum is athletic enough to get around lineman and providing he shows gradual progress with his strength and hand movement then he does have a role to play in the NFL.
The Carolina Panthers could use someone to come in on situational downs in the short-term. Wonnum fits this bill and he could even emerge as a potential starter if given time to develop.
