The Carolina Panthers need to add another new offensive lineman in the 2020 NFL Draft as Calvin Throckmorton would be a great addition.

It’s no secret that the offensive line of the Carolina Panthers has been bad for quite some time now. They’re not good at all when it comes to pass protection which will be needed this upcoming season as they welcome a new starting quarterback in Teddy Bridgewater. In the 2020 NFL Draft, while all eyes will be on the early defensive picks the Panthers make, it would be wise to add an offensive lineman in the middle to late rounds.

Anything can happen whenever a team is on the clock as it might make a ton of sense to draft offensive guard Calvin Throckmorton out of Oregon. He should more than likely still be available in Rounds 5-6 which would make him a solid selection thanks to everything he brings to the table.

At 6-5 and 317lbs, Throckmorton is truly the definition of versatile. He has experience playing offensive tackle, offensive guard, and yes, even at center. Throckmorton is all about doing whatever it takes to help his team as he’d be perfect to rotate into the Panthers’ offensive line due to injury or inconsistent play.

More from Cat Crave

Not only can Throckmorton do a decent job every single time he’s on the gridiron but he’s an extremely smart offensive lineman. He picks up assignments easily and has a very high football IQ. Throckmorton might not be an immediate starter this upcoming season but makes for one heck of a backup that could be developed nicely over his first few years in the pros.

STRENGTHS

Plug and play high caliber offensive lineman that can hold his own on any position on an offensive line. What makes Throckmorton thrive is his ability to do well in shotgun formations and passing plays as he could be used in a rotational role for such plays. Excels against pass-rushing defenders as he’s able to sense quickly when they’re coming and adjust accordingly.

Throckmorton started a plethora of games and made a name for himself in Oregon as he earned a lot of recognition for playing at a consistent level and not allowing many sacks. He has a great motor and solid character as Throckmorton is always willing to adapt so he can contribute more when needed.

WEAKNESSES

Will have a tough transition to the pros as he will need a few years of coaching and training to be developed into a full-time starter. The potential is there but coaches will need the patience to allow him to naturally progress and not rush him into a starting lineup too soon. He does not do well in rushing plays as he’ll either misjudge his lane or not be in the right place for proper blocking setups.

Throckmorton will need to mentally prepare to go from being a consistent starter in college to a developmental player in the pros. While he should be able to handle it, frustration might set in as he learns a ton of new techniques to elevate his game. Will have double the work due to having to also learn pro-level strategies for power rushing plays.

PANTHERS PREDICTION

The Panthers will see the value Throckmorton instantly brings to their team and take a chance on him in Round 5 with the No. 152 overall pick. Expect to see him be brought in occasionally on substitution plays as he does his best to prepare for a long journey ahead. Hopefully, things work out well with the Panthers and in a few years, you’ll see him as a starting offensive lineman.
