The 2020 NFL Draft is almost here as the Carolina Panthers have a lot of areas to address. Their best case scenario is staying pat with the No. 7 overall pick and bolstering their defense.

With the 2020 NFL Draft on the horizon, the Carolina Panthers currently have the No. 7 overall pick. It’s a premium spot that should enable them to land a future franchise player that can step right in and take care of business. For the most part, it’s expected that the Panthers will use this selection on a defensive player and rightfully so.

The best case scenario for the Panthers would be to not consider trading up, trading down, or making any surprise decisions with the No. 7 overall pick. No, they don’t need another quarterback or even a wide receiver in the first round as their biggest area of need is on their defensive line.

For years now, their run-stopping abilities have been terrible. They haven’t been able to stop the run against the most mediocre of running backs as it’s about time they use the No. 7 overall pick on a stud defensive tackle. Ideally, defensive tackle Derrick Brown of Auburn would be perfect for the Panthers and hopefully, he’s still available when they’re on the clock.

Besides what to draft in the first round of this year’s draft, they still have seven more picks to work with. They can use the rest of their draft picks to further address other areas of need at cornerback, offensive line, and linebacker. It also wouldn’t hurt to potentially consider another tight end or even a wide receiver to their offense for depth.

Hopefully, general manager Marty Hurney gets it right as the Panthers are in Year 1 of what appears to be a complete rebuild. It won’t be easy as they’ll more than likely be on the outside looking in this upcoming season but there is hope for a brighter future. For now, all they can focus on is upgrading their defense, hoping everything comes together on offense, and that new head coach Matt Rhule is the right guy for the job.

Fans are excited to see what Rhule and an entirely new leadership regime can do within the next few years. It all starts with this year’s draft as in order for them to rebuild the right way, they can’t afford to make any major mistakes here with the players they select as it can set them back a few years.

For now, the expectations for Panthers in 2020 are low but they can add the building blocks now to become contenders again in the future. Realistically, it’ll more than likely take the Panthers about two to three years from now to start seeing consistent results and until then, all they can do is continue adding talent. There is no better way than through the NFL Draft and selecting players that are ready for the challenges ahead. Especially defensive players that can contribute immediately upon arrival.
