3. Linebacker

The Carolina Panthers have selected a linebacker nine times in the NFL Draft over the last decade. They have hit some real home runs during this period, most notably with their Hall of Fame-bound inspiration Luke Kuechly.

The ninth overall selection in 2012 enjoyed a legendary eight-year career before announcing his shock retirement this offseason. Kuechly secured Defensive Player of the Year in just his second season in the NFL, just one year removed from winning Defensive Rookie of the Year.

He quickly emerged as the Panthers’ leader and racked up 1,092 tackles, 12.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, and 18 interceptions during a standout career. He was a first-team All-Pro selection on five occasions and made the Pro Bowl seven times.

Another solid pick from the Panthers was Shaq Thompson. The player was taken 25th overall in 2015 out of Washington and is now considered arguably their best player on defense following the offseason departures.

He was rewarded for his exceptional play in 2019 with a four-year, $54.43 million contract extension that included a $16 million signing bonus and $27.52 million guaranteed. This keeps him with the franchise until 2024.

The likes of David Mayo and A.J Klein did not work out as expected and the jury is still out on Andre Smith. One notable disappointment was Lawrence Wilson, who was drafted in the sixth round and lasted a few short weeks with the organization.

Wilson was originally signed to the practice squad in time for the 2011 season. But he was released just two months into his contract after being cited for speeding and marijuana possession.
