Top 3 positions the Panthers have drafted over last decade
By Dean Jones
1. Cornerback
The Carolina Panthers have taken no fewer than 12 cornerbacks in the NFL Draft over the last decade. Given their need for some elite talent at the position in 2020, it would be a jaw-dropping shock if they didn’t add to this tally in the coming days.
Arguably the best selection from this particular time period was Josh Norman. The player was selected in the fifth round back in 2012 and quickly emerged as one of the standout corners in the league.
He was a shutdown presence on one side of the field during his time with the Panthers. But things have not gone according to plan for Norman since his big-money move to the Washington Redskins in 2015.
James Bradberry’s potential really came to the fore last season in an otherwise disappointing campaign for the Panthers’ defensive unit. This attracted the attention of other teams during the offseason and the player did not last long on the free-agent market.
The former second-round selection out of Samford penned a three-year, $43.5 million contract with the New York Giants, which included $31.98 million guaranteed.
Bradberry’s departure has left the door open for Donte Jackson to emerge as the potential No. 1 cornerback in Carolina. There is definitely something there regarding the second-round pick out of LSU in 2017. But he will need to stand up and be counted this year with more responsibility on his shoulders.
Other cornerback selections in recent years include Corn Elder, R.J Stanford, Brandon Hogan, and Zack Sanchez.
