38. player. Pick Analysis. CORNERBACK. UTAH. JAYLONJOHNSON. 87. Scouting Report

There is a high likelihood that the likes of Xavier McKinney and Yetur Gross-Matos will be gone by the No. 38 selection. If either of them makes it that far down the NFL Draft order it would be a temptation for the Carolina Panthers that is going to be hard to refuse.

Johnson represents a tremendous value in this spot and has the scope to be a day one starter in the NFL if he responds to coaching during training camp, whenever that gets underway.

The former Utah standout has great reactions and also boasts supreme mobility that allows him to play with his back to the ball. Johnson is fluid in his movements and although he has good size, his relative lack of length from a playing perspective does bring some problems against rangy receivers.

That being said, Johnson is a tenacious individual who works incredibly hard on improving his craft. It might also be prudent for the Carolina Panthers to bring in a veteran on a short-term deal while Johnson refines certain areas of his game.

Another standout feature of his game is physicality. Johnson likes nothing more than mixing it with wideouts off the block and is more than a match for them consistently. He has a high motor and finishes off plays well for a cornerback.

The prospect also appears to be scheme friendly and this sort of versatility will come in very handy in the NFC South. While rookie corners have a tendency to become exposed on occasions as they adjust to the rigors of the NFL, Johnson comes with real upside and will be well worth considering.
