Carolina Panthers Draft: Kenny Willekes generating late buzz
By Dean Jones
What would Kenny Willekes offer the Panthers?
There is no denying that Kenny Willekes has some intriguing tools at his disposal ahead of his expected selection in round two or three. He has a high ceiling and boasts not only plenty of natural ability but also good instincts on the field.
You will not find a more competitive player than Willekes, He plays every down with a superb sense of urgency and this has brought with it significant results over the last two seasons. There are some kinks to his game that need working out. But Willekes is a keen learner and shows the right sort of attitude that is going to ensure growth in the pros.
One good thing Willekes would have going for him if he ended up with the Carolina Panthers is that he could learn at his own pace. He would present an enticing proposition for coaches during the initial stages of his development. The player could still be of use while he learns his craft in specialist situations.
Willekes recorded 47.5 tackles for loss and 22 sacks over three seasons, which bodes well for his chances of doing some damage in the NFL. He will need to spend some considerable time in the weight room if he is going to have the same sort of success against offensive lineman at the next level.
The prospect will also need to work on his technique and develop a more polished pass-rushing repertoire if he is going to get the most out of his talents.
If he can do this, then one team is going to have a productive player on their hands. And judging by their reported interest, it could very well be the Panthers.
