Carolina Panthers: Can Efe Obada take a leap forward in 2020?
By Dean Jones
Can Efe Obada take a leap forward in 2020?
Much will depend on how much of the field Efe Obada sees as to whether he can become a more prolific presence on the Carolina Panthers defensive line. There is some strong competition up front after some shrewd moves both during free agency and the NFL Draft.
Obada is no stranger to fighting for recognition. He was undrafted in 2015 and eventually made the Panthers’ roster three years later. He now has two seasons of professional play under his belt and big things are expected this time around.
The player was on the field for just 27 percent of Carolina’s defensive snaps in 2019. This could rise substantially next season and it will be up to Obada to make the most of every opportunity that presents itself.
There should also be a heightened sense of urgency regarding every member of the Panthers’ defensive front. With so much depth on the roster, it will not take long for anyone underperforming to find themselves on the bench in favor of someone who is giving more to the team.
Obada is set to enter free agency in 2021 and it remains to be seen whether he will be given a longer contract. If he can get somewhere in the region of 5-8 sacks next season it would be difficult to let him leave.
This is not out of the realms of possibility. Obada is strong, has a high motor, and is physical enough to get off blocks. Putting him on a line that also had Short and Brown on the interior will also give him more room to work with.
It is hard not to like Obada and the way he has risen to prominence. Another chance has now presented itself, and it wouldn’t be a huge shock to see the player take another leap forward with extra time on the field.
