Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is not a target for the New England Patriots, but why would they look in a different direction?

It doesn’t look like Cam Newton will end up on the New England Patriots anytime soon, despite speculation to the contrary.

The former Carolina Panthers star was released amid strange timing earlier this offseason. This left his options regarding another starting spot in the NFL slim for 2020.

After odds were slashed by Sportsline on Newton joining the Patriots following their decision not to take a quarterback in the NFL Draft, Jeff Howe of the Athletic reported that the 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player is not a candidate to link up with head coach Bill Belichick, stating “nothing has changed” on this front.

This would represent a blow for Newton, who would undoubtedly jump at the chance to join an organization that has achieved a significant amount over the last two decades. He is a big enough character to take on the challenge of replacing legendary quarterback Tom Brady, who left the franchise in free agency to sign a two-year deal with the Panthers’ NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Newton is expected to make a full recovery following foot surgery in time for the new season. The Panthers let the player go after they managed to secure the services of Teddy Bridgewater from the New Orleans Saints on a three-year, $63 million contract that also included a $15 million signing bonus and $33 million guaranteed.
