Panthers News: What can they expect from Schofield in 2020?

It would appear that Mike Schofield has the potential to be a plug-and-play starter for the Carolina Panthers. The franchise is in desperate need of more reliable performers on the offensive line interior and their newest signing fits the bill.

He is seen as an instant upgrade on current projected left guard starter Dennis Daley, who gave up seven sacks in 2019. Schofield is a consistent player who the Panthers probably got a first-hand account of from Pro Bowl left tackle Russell Okung, who was a teammate last season.

Having Schofield and John Miller as the guards could be just what quarterback Teddy Bridgewater needs to go through his progressions in what is expected to be a period of transition for the franchise. The signal-caller penned a three-year $63 million deal with $33 million guaranteed to prize him away from the New Orleans Saints. So the more time in the pocket he has, the better.

Okung and Taylor Moton are set to solidify the tackle positions, at least for next season. This should inspire confidence that the offense is going to do its part to ensure their predicted struggles won’t be as bad as initially feared.

Another benefit in Schofield’s arrival is the presence of Pat Mayer on the Panthers’ coaching staff. The offensive line coach has worked with him over the last three seasons with the Chargers and his input will have been vital in Carolina’s decision-makers taking him on.

If Schofield performs well, then there is nothing to suggest his stay in Carolina cannot be a long one.
