How would former Panthers QB Newton help the Patriots?

If the New England Patriots want to keep their stranglehold on the AFC East ahead of the improving Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins, then they need someone better under center. It is just that simple.

Brian Hoyer has hardly set the world alight when given an opportunity to start during his career. Jerrett Stidham is unproven and while he may turn out to be a viable option, this is unlikely to happen right away.

Add to this the Patriots’ losses on defense, and there is real concern their dominance over the NFL for more than two decades is now at an end. The writing was on the wall in 2019 following a poor campaign that eventually ended with a home playoff loss to the Tennessee Titans in the wildcard round.

They had the easiest schedule in the entire league last season. That will not be the case this time around and they do look up against it in their hopes of returning to the postseason.

Former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton would give their fanbase fresh hope things might not be all doom and gloom going forward. He would provide the Patriots with something they haven’t had from the quarterback position in more than 20 years. That is mobility and the ability to make things happen outside the pocket.

His accuracy hasn’t been the most elite during his career. But it is a definite upgrade on what the Patriots currently have. The Panthers were right to move on from Newton during their rebuild, although there is no disputing the overall impact he had on the organization.

Bill Belichick is confident in his own methods, and rightfully so. Newton might not be a scheme fit in New England at the present time. But the NFL is an adapt or die league and a fresh approach to the Patriots offense might keep them relevant for a little while longer.

That makes it incredibly bizarre that they are not showing at least some interest in Newton. He has game-changing potential who still commands significant attention despite his recent injury problems.

Their loss is going to be someone else’s gain. Panthers’ fans will know just how exciting Newton is when performing to the level he is capable of. It is easy to forget the player will only be 31-years-old by the time competitive action gets back underway.
