Carolina Panthers: Why potential Andy Dalton move makes no sense
By Dean Jones
The Carolina Panthers were named as a potential destination for free-agent quarterback Andy Dalton, but is it an option worth considering?
Speculation is already growing regarding the next team for quarterback Andy Dalton following his release by the Cincinnati Bengals. The Carolina Panthers were chosen as a potential destination by Tim Daniels of The Bleacher Report in a recent article.
He reasoned that there is no considerable backup that could immediately contribute if free-agent acquisition Teddy Bridgewater goes down with an injury.
If the Panthers might not possess the greatest depth at the position. Making a move for Dalton makes absolutely no sense. The organization is making a concerted attempt to rebuild and bringing in a veteran signal-caller who has had moderate success during his career shouldn’t be on Carolina’s radar.
While Dalton might be a good scheme fit for the New England Patriots. The Panthers have plenty of players who can break off big plays and acquiring a ‘dink-and-dunk’ quarterback would have a detrimental effect on the offense if the player ever got into the game.
Dalton performed above average in 2019. But it was clear his time in Cincinnati was coming to end and this was cemented by the fact the franchise spent the first overall pick on LSU’s Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow.
The former second-round pick ended his Bengals’ career with 31,594 passing yards, 204 touchdowns, and 118 interceptions. There could be a chance Dalton enjoys a second coming of sorts with a new team. But that should not be with the Panthers.
