Carolina Panthers: Ron Rivera would not mind Cam Newton reunion
New Washington Redskins head coach Ron Rivera recently chimed in his thoughts if a reunion with free agent quarterback Cam Newton would happen. The Redskins would benefit from such a move.
At this point in time, free agent quarterback Cam Newton is still trying to find a new home. He hasn’t drawn any significant interest from NFL teams so far this offseason. Even with the 2020 NFL Draft officially in the books, no teams have bothered to reach out to Newton as the odds are against him at the moment.
With what is going on in the world with social distancing, Newton has been diligently working hard on making a return to the gridiron but can’t do any physicals or team workouts. It’s a shame as all reports and even on his own social media accounts show that he’s in shape, working out, and ready for an opportunity to prove he still has what it takes to be a starting quarterback again.
Of course, it’s not easy to bounce back from having major foot surgery but Newton is determined to show he still has what it takes to be successful. Even his old head coach who is now running the show with the Washington Redskins wouldn’t completely rule out a reunion with his old starting quarterback.
Cam Newton to the Washington Redskins might make a lot of sense

In an article written by the New York Post, here is what head coach Ron Rivera said about whether or not he’d consider bringing Newton to the quarterback situation of the Redskins:
"“I think with Cam, and I have thought about (signing him), I mean, it’s something that’s run through my mind, and it’s about the situation and circumstances. I’m not sure I would do it. I’m not sure if I wouldn’t do it. It depends on circumstances.”"
Of course, Rivera being smart here considering he knew this would hit the media, played the safe card. He neither confirmed nor denied Newton could be a viable option to bring into the mix but in the grand scheme of things, it might make a lot of sense for the team.
If it’s anything the Redskins need is a veteran quarterback on their depth chart to help mold the young players that are looking to create their own legacies in the pros. The Redskins will have a training camp competition to determine who is the best man to be their starting quarterback and well, having someone who has been there and done that can only help the cause.
The Redskins will have Dwayne Haskins and Kyle Allen duke it out for the starting quarterback spot but it would be wise for Rivera to consider giving Newton a shot again as a veteran backup. If everything falls into place and Newton shows he can still get the job done, it could be a great situation to have as he could help mold Haskins for a brighter future.
It’s not that Haskins is incompetent or anything, but the more time he spends on the bench learning the ins and outs of the pros, the better he’ll be towards becoming a future franchise quarterback. This is where Newton could be a good short-term option for at least a year or so and be given a chance to earn a roster spot while mentoring Haskins.
Overall, it’s interesting to see Rivera not completely close the door shut on Newton but also kind of leave it slightly open in case the time comes to make a decision. Nobody knows Newton better than Rivera as a reunion on the Redskins might make sense. Especially if they want to give Haskins a solid veteran quarterback to learn from and see how Newton adapts to a backup role for now on a brand new team.
