Carolina Panthers named in Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes
By Dean Jones
The Carolina Panthers have been named as one of the possible destinations for Clemson’s star quarterback Trevor Lawrence in the 2021 NFL Draft.
There is no doubt that Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is going to be one of the first names called in the 2021 NFL Draft. He has franchise-changing potential and the Carolina Panthers were recently listed as one of the player’s possible destinations.
Barry Werner of USA Today’s Touchdown Wire put the Panthers high on his list in the “Trevor Lawrence Sweepstakes”, with the team expected by many to struggle during the initial period of their rebuild.
Reasoning his decision, Werner had this to say on the prospect of Lawrence in Carolina.
"“How sweet would it be for the Panthers to have Trevor Lawrence simply shift his tack from North Carolina to South Carolina? Matt Rhule has plenty of leash when it comes to turning around a team that is sinking fast. Don’t expect miracles in his first year. And with Lawrence as the prize, losing could be a prize.”"
Much will depend on how the team gets on in 2020 as to whether they are in a position to take Lawrence. The prospect has all the markings of the No. 1 overall pick next year and it is going to take a campaign of considerate regression from the gunslinger to make NFL teams think otherwise.
The Panthers invested a lot in Teddy Bridgewater during the offseason. But the temptation to take Lawrence is they are able to might be too good to turn down.
He is no stranger to the area and could be just what Matt Rhule needs to speed up their transition from also-rans into championship contenders.
