Cam Newton making a big mistake not wanting a backup role
Reports are coming out that free agent quarterback Cam Newton has decided not to sign with a new team unless it’s for a starting role. Talk about making a big mistake.
After months of speculation, the football world finally has an update on what exactly is going on with free agent quarterback Cam Newton. There are a few ideal places for him to sign that would make sense but at this point in time, nothing has come to fruition. This new update has shed light on why even after the 2020 NFL Draft, Newton has yet to land on a new team.
Joe Person of The Athletic revealed that Newton has no intention to sign with a team as a backup. If anything, he’s willing to wait it out, as long as it takes apparently, for a starter to get hurt so he can be signed with a guaranteed starting role. Of course, he can do whatever he wants but this is a big mistake in the grand scheme of things.
Due to his injury history and the fact that he was on the decline over the last few years with the Carolina Panthers, he isn’t the same dynamic player he once was back in 2015. He’s also coming off of major foot surgery due to an unfortunate injury last year and of course, to any new potential organization, it’s too risky to throw him into a starting role right off the bat.

The best thing Newton should do is just look at the reality of the situation. The majority of teams by now all have concrete plans in places for their quarterback situations. Many have franchise quarterbacks that are ready to start but one thing a lot of these young players need is coaching, mentoring, and veterans around them.
This is an area where Newton could thrive in as many quarterbacks that have gone through what he did, Teddy Bridgewater for example, took the humble route of taking a step back to move big steps forward. There is nothing wrong with being a backup and restarting your career again due to injuries, a decline in play, or just the fact that you’re not the same player you once were about five years ago as it is in Newton’s case.
If Newton is serious about wanting to get back into the spotlight again, it might not be as a starter. Yeah, it’s understandable that he wants to go back to being a starting quarterback again but not a single team is willing to just give him the keys unless they’re desperate. This probably won’t happen until deep into the regular season and even then, would he mentally and physically be ready to step in and deliver? His best bet is to get on a team as a backup, go through training camp, preseason football, hopefully, earn a roster spot, and then ride the bench until his number is called.
The fact that Newton doesn’t want to go this route could have everything implode on him. He has a better chance of being a starting quarterback in another year or two if he restarted his career as a backup and proved he still has what it takes to be an effective starting quarterback. Word gets out quick in the NFL and if he’s lighting it up in preseason action or showing how much of a team player he is being a high-quality veteran backup, he’ll have bigger opportunities in the future. Especially a few that have starting quarterback positions they’d be ready to offer him because of him taking a year or two working his way back up.
Overall, Newton is making a huge mistake by not wanting a backup role. It closes his small window of opportunity and by only wanting a starting role, will keep him on the outside looking in. If it’s anything he should have learned from his final few years with the Panthers is that he needs to work his way back up to being Superman once again.
