Carolina Panthers: Why a Newton/Rivera reunion makes sense

Carolina Panthers: Why a Rivera/Newton reunion would work
This would be the most logical move that former Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera could make. Dwayne Haskins might come on in his second year after plenty of struggles during his rookie campaign. But he was not brought in by the current regime and it remains to be seen whether or not he can impress them going forward.
Kyle Allen made a huge impression for the Panthers in 2019 before fading considerably as the season progressed. Bringing Cam Newton into the fold would be a shrewd move as Rivera has proven adept of getting the most out of the player’s exceptional skill set.
Given the uncertainty surrounding training camp due to the coronavirus pandemic, having someone that knows Rivera’s system inside-out could bring significant rewards when competitive action gets back underway. Newton fits into this bracket and would have no trouble acclimatizing himself with the playbook.
The Redskins have some talented young wide receivers at their disposal. But they will need someone reliable throwing them the ball to aid their development and this is something the franchise might not get from Haskins or Allen.
This would be a different story with Newton under center. His pass accuracy might not have been elite during his career. But he represents an upgrade on Washington’s current options if he makes a return to full fitness.
Newton is quickly running out of options, so a chance to reunite with Rivera would be more than enticing. A short-term deal with plenty of incentives would be a win-win situation for both parties.
If the quarterback returns to the level of old, there will be no shortage of suitors in free agency next year. This would also allow Haskins another year of development behind the scenes that would be beneficial for his long-term prospects.
The Redskins, much like the Panthers, are seen as also-rans in their respective divisions next season. Their fortunes would improve dramatically with the addition of Newton and it is a move that makes perfect sense.
