Panthers Player No. 2: Tre Boston – S
Tre Boston did sign a new three-year, $18 million extension with the Carolina Panthers this offseason. This included an $8 million signing bonus and a further $8 million guaranteed.
While this is seen as a vote of confidence in Boston’s ability to guide a young defense from the back end. There is an out regarding the contract after the 2021 season and the Panthers did draft two young safeties with enormous potential.
The franchise traded back into the second round to take Southern Illinois product, Jeremy Chinn. They also used their fifth-rounder to select former XFL star, Kenny Robinson.
Both players come with a high ceiling and it would be a surprise if they did not make some sort of contribution early on. Boston’s starting spot is secure in 2020. But that might change next year if he does not perform to the level he is capable of.
The two rookies at safety play with ruthless aggression and have all the traits new head coach Matt Rhule is looking to install in the Panthers’ defense. If they live up to expectations, Boston could be the odd man out down the road.
That is not to suggest Boston cannot be one of the defenses standout performers this season. The Panthers will need him to be at the top of his game and build on a 2019 campaign that saw the player finish with 68 tackles, three interceptions, and 11 pass deflections.
