Carolina Panthers: How Kawann Short can help Derrick Brown
By Dean Jones
How can Short help Brown for the Carolina Panthers?
Every rookie needs someone to look up to as they find their feet in the pros. Kawann Short can be that man for Derrick Brown.
There is no doubt the duo represents a defensive tackle tandem that could be very successful next season. What comes after that will likely be down to Short’s production as he is due to make $12 million in base salary during the final year of his contract and count an astronomical $20.83 million against the Carolina Panthers salary cap.
Regardless of whether Short is with the team in 2021. Brown should make the most of such a prolific presence alongside him next year as he looks to emulate or even surpass the player’s achievements.
Having someone to provide valuable advice on what it takes not only to be a good professional, but also a productive player in the NFL is invaluable. Things like day-to-day habits, routines, and how to deal with the added quality offensive lineman in the NFL is something Brown should utilize at every given opportunity.
A number of locker room leaders have departed the Panthers this offseason. Players like Short will have to step up and fill the void left by the likes of Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly, and Gerald McCoy.
One thing that would assist is by making sure Brown has all the tools and knowledge available to ensure he maximizes his potential. Getting taught by the coaching staff is one thing. But learning the characteristics of in-game situations from someone like Short could have a hugely significant impact.
There might well be some growing pains for the Panthers in 2020. That is expected in the first year of a projected rebuild. However, giving players like Brown the right platform from which to build is going to be essential for the organization’s long-term aspirations.
Short has a vital role to play in 2020, both on the field and with Brown’s adjustment.
