Walker emerged as an MVP candidate before the league was canceled thanks to Covid-19. While that might have denied him some individual honors, it did make scouts sit up and take notice regarding his skill set.
He eventually opted to sign with the Panthers on a two-year, $1.56 million contract that came with a $150,000 signing bonus and just $150,000 guaranteed. This is a bargain-basement price for a player that has a real shot of contributing in some form.
Walker needs some work going through his reads at the next level. But his ability to make something out of nothing running the ball is an enticing proposition that Joe Brady might want to install into the Panthers offense in specialist situations.
This would allow the player to get some experience on the field while backing up Teddy Bridgewater, which is going to do Walker’s development no harm at all.
Will Grier is projected to be the No. 3 option after failing to make the most of a chance to stake a claim for a starting job in 2019. He looked like a deer in the headlights behind an abysmal offensive line that played a role in six sacks during his time on the field.
He eventually finished with a 58.3 completion percentage for 228 yards, no touchdowns, and four interceptions. These two backups fully put the onus on Bridgewater to deliver in 2020, although there is the potential of bringing in another veteran presence to compete in training camp.
