Reggie Bonnafon is listed as the No. 2 back currently. He showed glimpses of what he is capable of during his rookie campaign and managed to secure an impressive yards-per-carry average of 7.3. This can give the coaching staff plenty of cause for encouragement regarding the player’s ability to step in when needed.
The Panthers took the decision to release Marcus Murphy this week, which leaves the battle for No. 3 on the Panthers 2020 depth chart wide open. There is the chance Carolina brings in a veteran presence for little money between now and the season opener. But they might be forced to go with either Mike Davis, Jordan Scarlett, or undrafted free agent Rodney Smith.
Minnesota’s all-time leading rusher is an intriguing option for the organization. However, Smith must prove his worth in a short space of time with the prospect of a shortened training camp on the horizon.
He will be given every chance by Matt Rhule and offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who will know the player well having come from the college ranks themselves this spring. Scarlett is another option after seeing limited action from the fifth-round pick during his rookie season.
Although a McCaffrey injury represents the worst possible scenario for the Panthers. It is something they need to plan for and with the options available, a committee approach might be more beneficial.
