Russell Okung – OT

There have been plenty of questions asked as to why the Carolina Panthers parted ways with Pro Bowl guard Trai Turner in exchange for veteran left tackle Russell Okung. It appears to be one of the more bizarre moves from the franchise during a frantic offseason that has transformed the roster.

Okung is a Pro Bowler himself after a standout career to date. However, the lineman has suffered his fair share of injuries in recent seasons and was on the field for only 257 snaps in 2019.

The Panthers offense has all the tools needed in both running and passing downs to become a threat. However, the offensive line remains an area of substantial concern and will not be helped with a host of new faces trying to come together and be a cohesive unit in such a short space of time.

That is why there is enormous pressure on Okung both during training camp and heading into the season. He needs to not only perform well individually. But also use his experience to good effect and assist those around him to get the most out of their abilities.

Okung will be tasked with protecting Teddy Bridgewater’s blindside and it could be a long season for the quarterback if his left tackle is not at the top of his game. The player is also heading into the final year of his deal and will need to show a sufficient level of ability of his stay in Carolina could be a short one.
