Panthers depth chart: Tight end hopes pinned on Ian Thomas
By Dean Jones
Tight end No. 1
The Carolina Panthers depth chart is led at the tight end position by Ian Thomas. After showing glimpses of what he is capable of in Greg Olsen’s various absences through injury, the player will finally get the chance to make a starting spot his own for the considerable future.
This represents a significant opportunity for Thomas. He was taken in the fourth-round out of Indiana in 2018 with a view to possibly becoming Olsen’s long-term successor.

His rookie campaign was extremely encouraging. Thomas caught 36 passes from 49 targets on his way to 33 yards and two touchdowns. This level of production decreased in 2019, with the player only catching 16 balls for 126 yards and a score.
While that might be a little concerning. The Panthers have given Thomas a substantial confidence boost with their moves, or lack thereof, during the offseason so far. He will be given an opportunity to make a real go of things with more time on the field heading into the penultimate year of his rookie deal.
A good third year in the league normally puts players in a good spot to earn a more lucrative deal long-term. Thomas will be fully aware of this and it comes with additional pressure.
Big things are expected of Thomas in 2020. New offensive coordinator Joe Brady got the most out of his tight ends at LSU and the Panthers will be hoping he can work the same magic with their No. 1 option.
