Why the Panthers won’t be signing Logan Ryan
By Dean Jones
The Carolina Panthers might be in the market for a veteran cornerback before training camp, but that will not be free-agent Logan Ryan.
Cornerback Logan Ryan is one of the hottest names on the free-agent market after he parted ways with the Tennessee Titans. Despite an all-defense draft, the Carolina Panthers could still use a veteran player at the position to ease their transition in 2020.
Ryan has been solid if unspectacular cornerback in recent seasons. He has especially thrived covering in the slot, which is an area of need for the Carolina Panthers if they plan to use their second-round pick, Jeremy Chinn, at the safety spot.
According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, the man who ended Tom Brady’s career as a New England Patriot with a pick-six is said to be looking for a deal that pays him north of $10 million per season. Given the Panthers’ predicament regarding their salary cap in 2020, it seems unlikely they would be able to come to an agreement with Ryan even if they did have an interest.
Although Ryan was close to signing with the New York Jets, he recently stated that “nothing is off the table” when it comes to his options. While there is little doubt he would be a massive asset on Carolina’s young roster going forward. They would need to make some serious moves elsewhere to pull off any kind of acceptable deal for the player.
Whether Ryan is worth that type of investment is another matter entirely. He was targeted more than any other cornerback in 2019 and managed to given away 80 receptions from 114 balls thrown his way.
