Should the Panthers draft team wait for Sam Howell?

The Carolina Panthers draft plans for next season and beyond will ultimately depend on how well the team does in 2020. They have some lowly expectations on their shoulders. But that does not mean they should be applauded in any way if things go pear-shaped.

Teddy Bridgewater signed a three-year, $63 million contract in free agency. However, there is an out regarding the player in 2020 that would save the Panthers $21 million in salary-cap space if they chose to go in this particular direction.

The organization does not have much of a choice other than keeping Bridgewater around until that time. And there is a chance the quarterback can make a real go of another starting chance for a prolonged period.

If Carolina struggles as expected. The temptation to draft Trevor Lawrence might be too much to resist. But if Bridgewater plays well enough to get more than a one-year stint as a starter, it would allow the Panthers to take a premier left tackle in Penei Sewell and wait another year for a top quarterback.

If Sam Howell continues to develop at his current rate, then the sky is the limit. He looks to be an exciting NFL prospect after just one year of experience and is sure to be a hot scouting commodity over the next two seasons.

Should the Panthers draft team end up waiting for Howell, it would be an immensely popular pick. The Tarheels’ fanbase has already fallen in love with the player and great things could be ahead if he continues to display the same sort of characteristics that made him such a success during his freshman year.

One suspects that Lawrence has a higher ceiling. But if Howell can cut out errors with more snaps under his belt then he is going to make a franchise very happy in the coming years.
