Panthers preseason: @ New England Patriots (Week 2)
Normally a trip to Foxborough would come with an enormous sense of dread, whatever time of year it’s on the calendar. That does not appear to be the case heading into 2020 due to a series of high-profile departures from the New England Patriots this offseason.
Legendary quarterback Tom Brady’s long association with the franchise came to an end after he departed in free agency in favor of a move to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He will be joined at the Bucs’ by prolific tight end Rob Gronkowski, who came out of retirement and was swiftly traded by the Patriots prior to the NFL Draft.
This leaves Bill Belichick facing the prospect of going into their season opener with either Jarett Stidham or Brain Hoyer under center. Speculation continues to mount regarding a move for former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who is still a free agent two months after his release.
The Patriots defense is led by All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who enjoyed the finest year of his career in 2019. The backend is also boosted by Patrick Chung and intriguing second-round pick Kyle Dugger.
Given this game is on the Panthers’ preseason schedule, they might not see much of the Patriots’ starters in this particular clash. However, their wide receivers might get more time on the field than most after a disappointing campaign that played a leading role in the eventual playoff demise at home to the Tennessee Titans.
