Could Caylin Newton follow in his brother’s footsteps and end up with the Carolina Panthers?

There is something intriguing about Caylin Newton. But could the quarterback follow in brother Cam’s footsteps and one day become a member of the Carolina Panthers?

The 6-foot signal-caller announced his decision to transfer to Auburn University in time for next season. This is the same place where Cam Newton brought a National Championship before he was eventually taken No. 1 overall by the Panthers in 2011.

This is going to bring some significant pressure. Something that Caylin Newton is already acutely aware of. The player has shown flashes of brilliance during his college career so far. But much more will be needed if he wants a team like the Carolina Panthers to take a chance on him at the next level.

Newton will not likely get much of a chance to start with the Tigers, at least initially. Signal-caller Bo Nixon looks a tremendous prospect and another that can carry on the conveyor belt of Auburn players that make a success of their NFL careers.

That being said, there is nothing to suggest Newton’s athleticism is something that cannot be utilized to good effect in specialist situations. He rushed for 555 yards on 155 carries for Howard University in 2018 before he left the team in October last year amid plans to transfer.

This had a lot to do with his completion percentage, which needs to improve significantly. Newton has completed a little more than 50 percent of his passes during his time under center. And his ability to read the game is something that will undoubtedly put NFL scouts off during his evaluation process.

What use would Caylin Newton be to the Carolina Panthers?

Realistically speaking, Caylin Newton has a long way to go before he can be considered a strong NFL Draft prospect. The Carolina Panthers will obviously monitor the situation, as they do with most college players. But whether they gamble on the player going forward is another matter entirely.

He should be commended for taking the early decision to take his chances elsewhere in pursuit of an NFL career. Although it appears unlikely that he will ever achieve the sort of things that his brother has during a standout career to date. With a little more refinement with a prestigious program, anything can happen in the coming months.

Having such a big name to live up to is going to come with its own complications. The player will also be wary of the Panthers given the messy way Cam Newton was released by the organization this offseason.

Newton is wise to follow the same path as his brother. Cam himself was a transfer from Florida before one of the greatest college seasons of any player in history.
