3 toughest matchups for Derrick Brown in 2020
By Dean Jones
Trai Turner (Week 3 on Carolina Panthers schedule)
Trai Turner will need no introduction to those associated with the Carolina Panthers. The stud right guard was a perennial Pro Bowler during his time with the franchise and provided an assured blocking presence from the offensive line interior.
The player was traded to the Los Angeles Chargers in exchange for veteran left tackle Russell Okung this spring. This appeared to be one of the most head-scratching moves that Carolina’s decision-makers have made so far and was ranked one of the worst offseason moves in the entire NFL recently.
Derrick Brown will not have to wait long before coming up against Turner. The Panthers are slated to travel to the new-look So-Fi Stadium in week three and this will be a fantastic test of the player’s credentials against one of the best in the business.
The Panthers’ offensive line went through its fair share of struggles in 2019. And Turner’s play was no different. He gave up a career-high six sacks last season and received a modest grade of 63.9 from Pro Football Focus.
This still ended up with Turner going to the Pro Bowl. But the prestige surrounding such a selection is diminishing with every passing year. The player could get back to something like his old self in a new environment. And it is going to be a good yardstick for Brown early on in the season.
