Best offseason moves for Carolina Panthers: Extending Christian McCaffrey and Tre Boston
There might have been plenty of departures from the Carolina Panthers this offseason. But the franchise did manage to extend two of their most important players to long-term deals.
All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey is the new face of the organization after signing a four-year, $64 million extension that included a $21 million signing bonus and a little over $38 million guaranteed. This represents a deserved reward for the player’s elite production since he arrived in Carolina.
McCaffrey became only the third player in NFL history to go over 1,000-yards rushing and receiving in the same season. And although he might not achieve the same feat in 2020. He will continue to be the focal point of Joe Brady’s offense during a critical campaign for the Panthers’ long-term aspirations.
Another notable extension was awarded to Tre Boston, who impressed considerably during the first year of his second spell with the organization. He was given a three-year, $18 million deal. And the player will now be tasked with leading a young secondary through a season that is bound to come with inconsistencies.
The Panthers deserve praise for getting McCaffrey and Boston tied down for their best years. Both players proved more than worthy of receiving such a financial commitment. And they can now be considered pivotal players on both sides of the ball.
