3 free-agents the Panthers could sign with Luke Kuechly savings
By Dean Jones
Which free agents should the Carolina Panthers look to sign with the money freed up by linebacker Luke Kuechly going on the reserve/retired list?
The Carolina Panthers freed up some salary cap space with the inevitable move of putting Luke Kuechly on the reserve/retired list. This has enabled them to split their dead cap money regarding the legendary linebacker over a two-year span. And it gives them some much-needed breathing space in the coming weeks.
Although the majority of this money will be allocated to getting their six remaining 2020 NFL Draft picks signed. But there is also the potential for the decision-makers within the Carolina Panthers to bring in more veteran help ahead of their return to minicamp.
This would be welcome in a number of different areas. The Panthers gutted their roster this offseason during the first year of their rebuild under new head coach Matt Rhule. But it has left them short of depth and experience.
Any player that comes in via free agency is likely to be a short-term option from the Panthers’ perspective. They have plenty of more financial wiggle room in 2021. And this has the potential to make them prominent players for big-name individuals who are on the lookout for a new deal.
For the Panthers to convince high-profile names to join them next spring. They will need to show progression in 2020 with a young core that is expected to go through its fair share of struggles. Whether the current roster can do this remains to be seen. So it is a pivotal campaign in this regard.
Here are three players that the Panthers should consider signing with the money saved from Kuechly’s retirement.
