Carolina Panthers free-agent target: Charles Clay – TE
The Carolina Panthers are currently going into 2020 almost entirely dependent on Ian Thomas’ ability to step up. They lost prolific veteran Greg Olsen to the Seattle Seahawks in free agency. And the onus will now be on the former fourth-round pick out of Indiana to deliver on his enormous promise.
It might be prudent for the Panthers to bring another veteran in on the cheap to provide cover for Thomas if things go pear-shaped. Although the free-agent market is relatively bare at this stage of the offseason. One name does stand out as someone that could help in the short-term.
Charles Clay is one of the more reliable pass-catching tight ends in the NFL. He spent last season with the Arizona Cardinals and although he is regressing with age. His experience and know-how has the potential to make a real difference on the Panthers’ young roster in 2020.
Any potential deal for Clay will come with little financial outlay. All the player is probably looking for at this stage of his career is a chance to contribute. And this is something he could see in Carolina.
Clay has the ability to impact the passing game on intermediate routes. The player is also a formidable red zone target that new offensive coordinator Joe Brady would no doubt use prominently if he ends up with the franchise.
What would be equally as useful from Carolina’s perspective is Clay’s ability as a blocker. He is an imposing figure who has done well in running or passing situations during his time in the NFL. And this is something the Panthers might not get from Thomas.
