3 best scheme-fits for former Panthers QB Cam Newton
By Dean Jones
Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals do have their long-term quarterback in No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray. But having Cam Newton on their roster as their primary backup would do them no harm at all.
Giving the former Carolina Panthers signal-caller the No. 2 role in place of Brett Hundley could significantly work in their favor. Newton would provide Murray with an accomplished role model during a critical sophomore campaign for the youngster. And he could slot in with little difference in the play-calling if the starter is forced to miss some time.
The Cardinals are expected to make substantial progress in 2020. And this could see them push for a postseason berth despite the high standard of the NFC West. They would not want to get derailed too much by a possible Murray injury, which has a relatively high probability given his style of play.
Getting Newton on board with a short-term deal would provide the organization with a security blanket next season. It would also give the player a foot in the door with a view to securing a starting spot elsewhere next spring.
Newton would have an embarrassment of riches if he ended up in Arizona. The team traded for Houston Texans’ stud wideout DeAndre Hopkins this offseason. And the roster also boasts exciting talent such as Christian Kirk, running back Kenyan Drake, and the evergreen Larry Fitzgerald.
At the very least, this potential move would give Murray with a strong veteran presence to call upon for advice, which could see his overall game reach ever greater heights.
