Carolina Panthers: Player No. 1 – Cam Newton (QB)

Everything looked primed for former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton to lead the franchise to its first Super Bowl in 2015. The signal-caller was at the very top of his game during the campaign, which eventually fell at the final hurdle.

The former No. 1 overall pick out of Auburn was nothing short of sensational on his way to the 2015 NFL MVP Award. He continued this trend throughout the postseason, which left only the Denver Broncos standing in the Panthers’ way.

Their superb season came crashing to a halt in no uncertain terms as they were demolished by the Broncos. Newton took his fair share of criticism for the team’s eventual downfall. But the protection in front of him was lackluster, to say the least.

It is a real shame that Newton and the Panthers were not able to finish off the best season in franchise history. The quarterback was an unstoppable force and led Carolina to a 15-1 regular-season record.

This now appears to be a distant memory when one considers what has transpired between Newton and the Panthers this offseason. The organization released him at a time that gave him little hope of earning a starting job elsewhere. And he is still on the free-agent scrapheap more than two months after the player was let go from a team that he transformed to superstardom.
