Carolina Panthers: Option No. 2 – running back by committee

Potentially losing Christian McCaffrey to injury would be a blow that cannot be understated to the Carolina Panthers. They don’t have any established players in the No. 2 role. And this would result in them replying mainly on unproven roster members with potential.

That is why new head coach Matt Rhule and offensive coordinator Joe Brady might opt to go with a running back committee is this unfortunate scenario plays out. This might be the best way to maximizing production and limit pressure on those who have not ever filled a starting role.

Reggie Bonnafon would shoulder most of the responsibility in any potential McCaffrey absence. The player made the most of his chances last season on his way to a lofty yards-per-carry average of 7.3. This was hugely encouraging production from the running back and something that will stand him in good stead going forward.

There could also be a role for Mike Davis, although it remains to be seen whether he will be with the organization by the time week one rolls around. The player counts $3 million against the Panthers’ salary cap in 2020. And it would not cost the franchise anything to release him and free up some much-needed financial wiggle room.

Jordan Scarlett was drafted last year but saw little of the field. He does have an intriguing skill set. But his lack of experience is concerning, and it might do more harm than good throwing him in at the deep end.

The Panthers might also find room for undrafted free agent Rodney Smith if he impresses in camp. Whichever way they decide to go, it would have to be a collective effort to try and get anywhere close to the level of production that McCaffrey provides.
