Carolina Panthers trade target: Jimmy Smith (CB)

The Carolina Panthers have made some eye-catching changes to their cornerback room this offseason. This has left them without a significant veteran presence to guide the group through a period of transition.

They did bring in Eli Apple in free agency. But the player’s production throughout his career has been questioned. It also represents a serious concern that he is the most experienced within the group in 2020.

This is something that might change before the Panthers’ season opener. Carolina will come up against some outstanding passing attacks next season. And the franchise could use someone that has the ability and know-how on the field.

Jimmy Smith has spent his entire career with the Baltimore Ravens and recently signed a new one-year deal worth $3.5 million. However, his chances of starting appear slim with Marcus Peters and Marlon Humphrey both enjoying exceptional campaigns last time out.

Whether a move to a team that has less chance of winning it all would entice the player at this stage is another matter entirely. However, Smith was on the field for just 41 percent of the Ravens’ defensive snaps last season. And it is doubtful the former first-round pick wants to finish up his career sitting on the sidelines.

There is nothing to suggest that Smith doesn’t have a couple more years of good production left in him. And this would be of real use to the Panthers during this timeframe.
