Carolina Panthers cuts: Ishmael Hyman (WR)

The Carolina Panthers brought in Ishmael Hyman during free agency on a one-year deal that could be worth $610,000 if he makes the roster. The wide receiver has some good skills to call upon. But the competition for places is unbelievably fierce at a position that already has its three starting options locked up.

Hyman spent last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and caught two of four balls thrown his way for 34 yards. This earned the player a respectable 57.4 grade from Pro Football Focus. And there is real hope he can build on this experience in 2020.

Whether Hyman gets the chance to do this is another matter entirely. The Panthers’ wideout room is brimming with playmakers. And new offensive coordinator Joe Brady will have to come up with a plan to get them all involved at some stage during the preseason.

Fringe players might only get a few receptions thrown their way during the preseason. So it is essential that Hyman makes the most out of any chances to impress. Becoming a valued contributor on special teams will also give his aspirations a shot in the arm.

Ultimately it will come down to timing and just how much the player wants it. If he fails to catch the eye, Hyman can be moved on with no financial repercussions.
