Worst offseason moves by the Carolina Panthers: Letting James Bradberry walk
The Carolina Panthers also took the decision not to try and keep No. 1 cornerback James Bradberry around. He was offered a three-year, $43 million deal by the New York Giants that included a whopping $31.98 million guaranteed to end a four-year association with the organization.
If Carolina’s decision-makers wanted to keep the former second-round pick, they would have made the necessary moves elsewhere despite their salary cap restrictions. It seems surprising that the Panthers chose to let Bradberry walk in free agency. And it has left the position extremely uncertain going into 2020.
Bradberry performed exceptionally well during his time with the organization. The secondary overall was below par in 2019. But the player gave up just 47 receptions from 80 targets, attaining three interceptions in the process.
His loss within the locker room is almost certainly going to be felt. And the Panthers have placed a lot of faith in Donte Jackson to make the necessary step up covering the opposition’s best receiver.
There is some real potential where Jackson is concerned. He has an eye-catching skillset and only allowed 38 receptions from 60 balls thrown his way last season.
Covering No. 1 wide receivers is a completely different ball game. And this becomes more prevalent when one considers just how tough some of the passing attacks are on Carolina’s schedule when competitive action gets underway.
