Carolina Panthers: Top 5 priorities for contract extensions in 2021
By Dean Jones
1. Carolina Panthers 2021 extension: Taylor Moton (OT)
While there are questions surrounding the majority of offensive linemen on the Carolina Panthers. The same does not apply to Taylor Moton.
The right tackle was a commanding presence on the line of scrimmage for the organization in 2019. And this saw him emerge as one of the brightest prospects at the position.
Moton is still relatively young in lineman terms. He is just 26-years-old and entering the prime of his career. So it would be a massive shock if the Panthers did not give him the sort of money that would make him commit long-term.
This becomes even more essential given the situation involving Russell Okung. The veteran left tackle was acquired via trade with the Los Angeles Chargers. But he has one year remaining on his current deal and would represent an enticing saving of $13 million if he is moved on.
At least some of that money could be allocated to Moton, who should command top dollar on the free-agent market if he has another strong season. The player did give up five sacks in 2019. But his performance overall earned him an impressive 76.2 grade from Pro Football Focus.
Keeping Moton around should be a no-brainer for the Panthers. They need stability at the position and could even move him over to the left tackle spot if the opportunity arises in the future.
The need to extend Moton is almost essential at the present time. And it is something that warrants immediate attention from the front office.
